“It is always exciting to hear the volunteers describe the projects they will be creating in their communities.
The special Community Enhancement Program grant of $10,000 went to Hurleyville Sullivan First to continue its community development efforts begun over three years ago. This new program allows organizations that have completed the Category C program to propose projects unique to their community in furtherance of their long-range plan. Hurleyville will use the money in four areas: purchase of a period street clock to enhance their gateway project; roof repairs and landscaping around the former St. Mary’s church building which will be converted into a museum annex and community hall; filing fees associated with submission of paperwork for non-profit status to the IRS; and the purchase of materials to construct a tool shed at Fireman’s Park.
The Environmental Demonstration Grants between $500 and $2500 were given to seven projects that protect, enhance or conserve natural resources. Projects will encourage use of reusable bags, restore habitat, raise awareness about land conservation, expand recycling efforts and educate students. This program is made possible through a cooperative effort with the Sullivan County Legislature and Empire Resorts.
Five categories of community beautification Phase I grants were awarded on Thursday:
· 21 single element projects in Category A received $1000
· 20 multiple element projects in Category B got $1500 and paid youth interns
· 5 three year-community development projects in Category C were given $5000 grants (with another $5000 in August), as well as interns and technical assistance
· 14 Mini-grants projects will be reimbursed up to $200
· 21 Spruce Up Your School awards up to $200 went to projects by classes or youth groups
These projects must be completed by August 4 and will be judged on August 8, 9 and 10. A second round of grants will then be announced at the Renaissance Awards Ceremony on August 11 at
These Phase II grants range between $1000 and $10,000 – with the Golden Feather Award of $50,000 going to a Category C project. There are also Environmental Stewardship Awards, Historic Preservation Awards, Showing of Flowers Awards and Project Maintenance Awards in each category; a Silver Feather Award in Category C; as well as completion grants for projects that finish.

A new initiative this year is a scholarship program, offering a limited number of scholarships to the college of one’s choice to volunteers who make a significant contribution to a Renaissance project. The Sullivan County Community College (SCCC) Foundation also offers full and part-time scholarships to Renaissance volunteers.
